How fast should my website load?

Websites — answered straight, by an operator who builds these systems rather than an agency selling them.

Short answer

Aim for the main content to appear in under 2.5 seconds on a phone over cellular data — that is Google's Largest Contentful Paint threshold. Most contractor sites fail it, usually because of oversized photos, a page builder, and a stack of tracking scripts.

The longer version

Speed matters for two reasons that compound. It is a ranking input, and it is a conversion input — visitors abandon slow pages, and a homeowner with a leak is the least patient visitor you will ever get.

The fixes are unglamorous and effective: compress and correctly size images, cut unused scripts and chat widgets, stop loading five font weights, and serve as much as possible as static HTML. Test on a phone on cell data, not on the office wifi that makes everything look fine.

Let's build something real.
