What is a service area business on Google?
Local SEO — answered straight, by an operator who builds these systems rather than an agency selling them.
A service area business serves customers at their location and has no storefront customers visit. On Google Business Profile you hide the address and list the cities or zip codes you serve. Most contractors, plumbers, electricians, and mobile trades fall into this category.
The longer version
Hiding the address is required, not optional, if customers do not come to you — and Google does suspend profiles that list a home address as a visitable location. If you genuinely have a shop with a counter, keep the address visible; if not, switch to service-area mode and list your towns.
The catch is that service area businesses still rank relative to their actual location. Listing forty cities does not make you appear in all forty. The list clarifies your coverage to customers and to Google; the ranking still leans on proximity, which is why website city pages carry more weight for a mobile trade.
